The printed circuit usually serves as a physical support for the placement and soldering of components.

In the past, it was common to manufacture printed circuit boards for system design using homemade techniques, however, this practice has been decreasing over time.

In recent years, the size of electronic components has been reduced considerably, which implies smaller pin spacing for high-density integrated circuits. Considering also the current operating frequencies of the devices, a very good precision in the printing process of the board is necessary in order to guarantee minimum tolerances.

The simplest printed circuit boards are those that contain copper wires on only one surface of the board. These boards are known as 1 Layer PCBs.

The most common today are 2-layer or 2 Layer PCBs. However, depending on the complexity of the circuit physics design, up to 8 or more layers can be manufactured if necessary.

PCB stands for Printed Circuit Board, but we use the acronym in English (Printed Circuit Board) so as not to confuse it with the PCI slots of our PC, for example.

What is a printed circuit board used for?

The printed circuit board is used to connect electrically through the conductive tracks mentioned above, and to hold mechanically, by means of the base, a set of electronic components.

The main purpose of these electronic circuits is to allow the electric current to carry out a useful work for our life, such as operating electrical appliances, lighting, moving a motor, among many others. In these years, the US Navy developed self-assembly. This method consisted of the component pins being inserted into the interconnect patterned sheet and then soldered.

Before the creation of printed circuit boards, point-to-point connection was used and for small productions or prototypes the wire wrap method was used.

Originally, electronic components such as copper or brass pins that were several millimeters long were used and holes were drilled in the circuit for these pins.

These components were soldered to the board and passed through holes. This method was called through-hole. Eventually, with advances in board lamination and etching techniques this process evolved to what is done today. Soldering is done automatically through a melted solder flux, in a wave soldering machine. The cost that was associated with the drilling that had to be done disappears thanks to surface mount.
